About PackTune

PackTune helps online sellers and fulfillment teams compare boxes they already have, using product fit, packing efficiency, shipment weight, dimensional weight, and available shipping rates.

How It Works

  1. Enter the product dimensions, weight, and quantity.
  2. Add the shipping boxes you have available.
  3. Select the shipment origin and destination.
  4. Compare capacity, packing efficiency, dimensional weight, and available shipping cost.
  5. Review the recommended box. Recommendations depend on the entered details, supported packing method, and available rate data.

Calculation Methodology

Packing model
The calculator tests six axis-aligned product orientations and estimates a regular grid by fitting whole units along each box dimension, then applies the box weight limit. It is not a full 3D bin-packing solver.
Packing efficiency
Product volume multiplied by quantity, divided by the total volume of the required boxes; the displayed value is capped at 100%.
Dimensional weight
The current DHL model divides the combined outer package volume in cm³ by 5,000 to estimate dimensional weight in kg.
Billable weight
For each parcel, the higher of actual and dimensional weight is rated. The DHL table rounds each parcel up in 0.5 kg steps through 30 kg and 1 kg steps above 30 kg; shipment rating weight is the sum of those rounded parcel weights.
Recommendation order
A candidate with a calculated rate ranks ahead of an unpriced candidate; available costs are compared first. If no candidate can be priced, packing efficiency, fewer required boxes, then capacity determine the order.

Understanding the Results

Capacity
The maximum number of product units that fit in one box.
Required boxes
The number of boxes needed for the entered quantity.
Total actual weight
Product weight plus the weight of all required boxes.
Total box volume
The combined outside volume of the required boxes.
DIM weight
A volume-based weight calculated using the selected shipping model.
Billable weight
The weight used for rating, based on actual and dimensional weight rules.
Empty space
Estimated unused box volume after packing the products.
Packing efficiency
The share of box volume occupied by the products.
Shipping cost
The available base rate for the selected route and billable weight.

Shipping Rate Information

  • The embedded DHL Express Worldwide rate data currently covers supported shipments originating in South Korea; only destinations with a mapped zone can be priced.
  • The embedded data is based on the official 2026 DHL Express Worldwide South Korea export rate guide.
  • Displayed prices are base rates only. Non-KRW currencies use fixed conversion factors, not live exchange rates.
  • The current model applies published per-piece limits: up to 70 kg and dimensions up to 120 × 80 × 80 cm.
  • Duties, taxes, clearance fees, fuel surcharges, and other applicable surcharges are not included.
  • Negotiated customer-specific rates and other carrier adjustments are not included.
  • Actual carrier charges may differ from the estimate.
  • Unsupported routes do not show a shipping cost.

Disclaimer and Limitations

The grid model does not represent every real packing arrangement. Protective materials, orientation restrictions, and mixed-size carton plans may change what fits. Prices are estimates, not a binding quote; confirm the final amount with the carrier. Carrier rules and dimensional-weight formulas can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a box recommended?

When a route can be priced, rateable candidates rank first and the lower estimated cost wins. If none can be priced, packing efficiency ranks first, followed by fewer boxes and capacity.

Why might a less efficient box cost less to ship?

Shipping charges can depend on billable weight and rate brackets. A box with more unused space may still have a lower estimated charge if its rated weight or required parcel count is lower.

What is dimensional weight?

It estimates how much space a parcel occupies as a weight value. The current DHL model uses package volume divided by a dimensional divisor, then compares it with actual weight for rating.

Why is shipping cost unavailable for some routes?

Rate data is currently configured for supported South Korea-origin routes and mapped destination zones. Other origins, unmapped destinations, or shipments outside supported limits have no estimate.

Can one shipment use multiple box sizes?

The tool estimates how many copies of each box candidate are needed. It does not combine different candidate box sizes into one mixed packing plan.

Why can my final DHL charge differ?

The estimate uses published base rates. Negotiated rates, fuel and other surcharges, duties, taxes, clearance fees, and shipment-specific adjustments may change the final charge.

Does this find the mathematically optimal packing arrangement?

No. It evaluates six axis-aligned orientations with a regular grid estimate; it does not solve unrestricted 3D bin packing or account for every packing constraint.

Can I compare international shipments?

You can select countries worldwide, but a shipping estimate appears only when the current South Korea-origin DHL dataset supports the origin and destination route.
